Bento asked to leave post

Finally, Paulo Bento was asked to leave from his post of Portugal manager. The loss in the opening Euro qualifying game the other day was hard to digest for the fans as well as for the officials. Playing at home against Albania, Portugal was being backed for three points, but, they couldn’t secure even one.
A new guy has already been slotted at the post by the Portugal football association. It’s Fernando Santos, the former Sporting CP, who has got the job.
All the top clubs that are there in Portugal have been managed by Santos at some point. However, as far as winning the Portuguese league is concerned, he has done that only once, that is, as Porto boss.
For the last 4 years though, Santos had been in charge of the Greece national side. He guided the Ethniki to the pre quarter finals in Brazil earlier this year.
However, the interesting thing is that during his last match as Greece boss, Santos had been sent off due to his unacceptable behaviour towards the referee and later on an eight-match ban was imposed on him.
So, if that ban stands, he will not be able to take charge of the Portuguese side with immediate effect.
There are reports that an appeal has been filed to FIFA from Santos’ side against that ban, but, the news has not been confirmed by either of the two parties.
The Portuguese association announced the appointment of Santos by releasing a statement today which read, “Fernando Santos is going to take over as the new manager. He will address the press tomorrow afternoon at the association headquarters.”
The next game for Portugal is against France. That’s a friendly and will take place on 11th of next month.
After that game, A Seleccao will be visiting Denmark to play their next Euro qualifier.
